The Andy Monument – Statue by Rob Pruitt

Recently unveiled in the cultural hub of  NYC at the Southwest corner
of Union Square is none other than a statue of our pop culture icon,
Andy Warhol. “The Andy Monument” joined George Washington
and Mohandas Ghandi on March 30,
standing a tall seven feet, facing Union Square Park.
The statue, sculpted with a chrome finish by Rob Pruitt,
signifies the Warholian legacy
that many people aspire to live from across the world.
The addition of “The Andy Monument” just a few feet from
what used to be his “Factory” studio, turns the spirit of Andy Warhol
into a tangible figure of aspiration and dreams for NYC,
which became Pruitt’s inspiration to create a destination for such dreams.
The shiny, chrome finish exudes a ghostly, yet comforting emotion,
as Andy stands with a Bloomingdales’ Medium Brown Bag in hand
along with a Polaroid camera around his neck.
The consumerism represented in the sculpture
not only speaks to Andy’s work as an artist, but also reinforces
the courage he had to fulfill his dreams and make it big, in a big city.
As this addition to the city’s collection of sculptures is the first
to pay tribute to an artist among the various political/religious leaders
across the city, “The Andy Monument” signifies the rich
and ever-evolving creative culture of NYC.
